Who am I? About Me

Hi, I’m Mark Gilbert — a former primary school teacher turned custom electric guitar builder, based in Hobart, Tasmania.
For over 20 years, I’ve been handcrafting unique electric guitars from start to finish in my workshop in Hobart.

Every instrument I build is a one-of-a-kind creation, made entirely by me using carefully selected Tasmanian timbers.
These native species—renowned for their beauty, resonance, and character—are at the heart of every guitar I make.

What sets my work apart is the attention to detail and the deeply personal process behind each build. I don’t operate on
an assembly line or outsource any part of the process—every curve, carve, and finish is done by hand, with passion and precision.

My guitars are played by musicians across Tasmania, around Australia, and internationally, including some highly respected
artists. Whether you’re a seasoned performer or a passionate collector, my goal is to build an instrument that feels like an
extension of your own creativity.

Responsibly sourced Tasmanian Timbers

At Mark Gilbert Guitars, we craft each custom electric guitar using select Tasmanian tonewoods — including Blackwood, Myrtle, Musk and Sassafras. These native timbers are chosen for their rich tonal character, natural beauty, and stability, offering a unique blend of warmth, clarity, and visual appeal.

Sustainably sourced from Tasmania’s rugged landscapes, each piece of wood features striking grain patterns and distinctive figuring, making every instrument one-of-a-kind. Combined with timeless design qualities and meticulous craftsmanship, these rare timbers help create guitars that are not only visually stunning but also sonically exceptional.

All wood on Mark Gilbert Guitars, except for the fret boards, is 100% RW/PEFC certified.
The fret board is legally harvested Indonesian ebony and is classified as RW/PEFC Controlled sources
